Derek Lam Has Tips For Interns + A New Line, 10 Crosby

How do you get nearly 200 interns into classrooms and lectures in the middle of the summer? You promise them Derek Lam and the chance to network with members of some of fashion's biggest names. That's the premise of Fashion Campus NYC, held this past weekend at Parsons The New School for Design.

At Fashion Campus NYC, reps from some of the biggest names (hello Saks, Ralph Lauren, CFDA and Coach) imparted some wisdom to interns for networking and interviewing - in between stories from their day jobs (company jets, hanging at Diane von Furstenburg's apartment - no big deal). The event was put together with the New York Center for Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), which will work with Parsons on another event this fall - the first ever Fashion Draft (sounds sporty!).

Derek Lam speaks with Simon Collins from Parsons School of Fashion.

Parsons alumnus Derek Lam spoke to students and kids looking to make it in fashion about how he balances his business and creativity, and what he looks for in an intern: curiosity and a good work ethic. Lam even gave some insight into his new diffusion line, 10 Crosby.

Unlike the more personal Derek Lam line, 1o Crosby is more of a collaborative effort with the Derek Lam design team to come up with an idea of accessible and interesting clothing. Lam says the line is another venue for him to explore and express his many ideas. The line isn't necessarily for a younger audience in the way that Miu Miu serves as "little sister" to Prada.

"With 10 Crosby, let's understand what's intriguing to someone who loves fashion and wants to reach for it quickly and at a good price," Lam told me.

And reach we will. Check out the slideshow of the 10 Crosby resort 2012 collection with top model Hanne Gaby Odiele.
