Designers Force Fanny Packs Upon Us, Yet Again

Oh, fanny packs. Ever since your brief popularity in the late '80s/early '90s, you have forced yourself on the fashion world when we least expect it. Initially worn by young kids hanging at the mall or ladies going for a mid-day jog, fanny packs were quickly relegated to fashion-repellant tourists and old men who wear socks with sandals. At least until "Sex and the City" came along. Costumer Patricia Field loves pushing the sartorial envelope, and she dressed Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw in a Gucci fanny pack on several occasions in 2000. Were fanny packs cool again? Must we all go buy a mini purse that clips on above the waist? The answer, of course, was and remains "no!" Despite the fact that designers unleash their scandalous, ironic, so-bad-it's-good-but-really-not accessory on the runways season after season, we will not give in to fanny packs. Not even the new Chanel version presented at Paris Houte Couture Fashion Week on Tuesday. You can keep on disguising those "hands-free bags" and "belted satchel" in fancy fabrics and designer logos. We're not biting. But if you are, here's everything you need to know about the upscale fanny pack.  By Joanna Douglas, Yahoo Shine Senior Fashion and Beauty Editor
