Get ready to wear lots and lots of purple next year: Pantone, the global authority on all things hue-related, has just announced Radiant Orchid as 2014's Color of the Year.

To come up with this particular shade, Pantone's team scoured the worlds of art, entertainment, fashion, travel and even sports to determine the most influential colors in each respective industry. In case you've forgotten, Emerald was 2013's Color of the Year; in 2012, it was Tangerine Tango.

So why Radiant Orchid for 2014? "While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in this morning's release. "An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm." Sounds good to us.

From a fashion standpoint, we can totally see what inspired Pantone's pick; pale, vibrant purples were all over the Spring 2014 runways at Prabal Gurung, Missoni, Burberry Prorsum and Chanel, to name just a few. And beauty-wise, we think Radiant Orchid's a great choice: just think of all those bold lip colors to come.
