Going Au Naturale: 7 Reasons to Stop Chemically Treating Your Hair

Going natural means different things to everyone. Many black women are going natural with their hair, meaning that we have stopped chemically straightening our hair with hair relaxers, which allows us to wear our hair in its natural state. In 2006, I decided to go natural, so I stopped chemically straightening my hair with relaxers every 8-12 weeks. I used to sit in my stylist's chair, where she would section my hair and apply the relaxer to my entire head; the end result would be long, flowing, straight hair. It was beautiful, but my scalp would suffer from chemical burns from the relaxers. Even though I experienced some discomfort from the process, I just figured this was the price of beauty. When I wasn't spending an obscene amount of money in the salon, I was spending hours straightening my hair once a week with a blow dryer and flat iron. The alternative wasn't really an option that I had ever considered, but one day out of the blue I thought to myself, "I'm going to go natural." Here are 7 reasons why I made that decision! - By Tamara Floyd
