Kate Middleton’s Royal Christening Attire: What Will She Wear?

Sarah Ball and Josh Duboff

With the royal christening nearly upon us, we have questions upon questions that will not be answered until Wednesday's ceremony. Who will be named the godparents? Will Cressida Bonas show up? And the question burning brightest of all: what will Kate Middleton be wearing? The Duchess of Cambridge has been reliably siding with Jenny Packham for big occasions post-baby, but perhaps-as Diana, Princess of Wales did with her nearly-flourescent fuchsia floral print shirt-dress ensemble for William's christening-Kate will make some kind of bold, surprising choice here, causing the Daily Mail to spontaneously combust. If we had to take a wild guess, we'd say she'll opt for a piece from Emilia Wickstead, the New Zealander whose dresses Kate has shown affection for in the past. Wickstead tends to make the sort of conservative, frill-free coat dresses and shifts that Kate has favored at higher-end, ceremonial occasions. (Runner-up: something custom from Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton, who, in addition to the wedding dress, made Kate's church-approved Diamond Jubilee dress.)

There is one question that we already have answered, however, which is what the man of the hour, three-month-old Prince George himself, will be wearing. The infant will be outfitted in a white Spitalfields silk-satin gown (designed in 1841 by Janet Sutherland, the daughter of a Scottish coal miner) that has been worn by 60 royal babies before him. (Well, technically, he'll be wearing a replica made by the Queen's couturier).
