Lady Gaga's Bra is a Feminist Fashion Statement

First came the bra burners. And now? Bra wielders. Namely Lady Gaga, whose mid-afternoon stroll through New York City on Thursday in nothing but platform boots, a miniskirt and a little black bra got everyone's panties in a twist. Bloggers said she looked "crazy," "eccentric," "like a streetwalker" and "barely decent." But what about brave? Not to mention right in style. What Madonna kicked off in the '80s with her lacy-bra-as-shirt look has actually become a fiercely feminist statement that seems to come and go in iconic waves. The '90s brought Sarah Jessica Parker and her exposed-bra shenanigans on "Sex and the City." And now we have everything from the so-called exposed center-bra on runways and magazine covers to the straight-up "I dare you to stop me" Gaga look in broad daylight, bold and daring all.--Beth Greenfield, Shine Staff
