Lena Dunham's Makeup Artist on How to Get the Star's Bold Emmy Look and Why Dunham is One of Her Favorite People

by Sarah Ferguson

Celebrity makeup artist Jo Strettel has worked with Lena Dunham on everything from magazine covers to the Golden Globes, but no matter what the occasion, Strettel says of the GIRLS writer/director/star, "she always like to push it." And push it she did at the Emmy Awards last night.

Dunham's beauty look-a striking, green smoky eye created by Strettel-was just as loud as her brightly-colored floral Prada gown. The idea, Strettel told me over the phone last night as the ceremony was underway, was to create a strong eye to balance out the revealing top portion of the dress and to contrast the actress' pixie cut. Using all Marc Jacobs Beauty products-a collection Strettel said she is "very impressed" with-the makeup artist played with a jade powder shadow and a mermaid green liner until the color matched that of the dress. Of course, my most pressing question for Strettel was what it's like to work with Dunham. "She's really smart, really sweet..one of those of really cool girls," Strettel told me. "She's kind of like a little fairy. She fluttered around naked most of the time." As if my girl crush on Dunham couldn't get any bigger, Strettel went on to highlight Dunham's humbleness, her ability to make people feel comfortable and her genuine interest in those around her. Bottom line? As Strettel put it, she's "everything and more than you can ever imagine."
