Today the Girl Scouts turn 101! On March 12, 1912, Juliette Low of Savannah, Georgia gathered together 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides. The following year American Girl Guides was renamed the Girl Scouts, and the rest is history! Today there are over 3.2 million Girl Scouts, a figure which combines the girl members and their adult leaders. According to the Girl Scout's website, over 59 million American women have been a Girl Scout. I remember Girl Scout meetings after school in the cafeteria and playing some sort of game involving passing an orange between your knees. There were speakers and lessons, but most of all it allowed me to feel like I was part of something larger than myself - a feeling I'm sure these now famous former-Scouts had too.
