More than 774 million of the world's adults (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) cannot read or write, reports the International Reading Association, an organization of literacy professionals. Roughly 123 million children worldwide lack those same skills, and are often denied any access to education. It is for this reason and more that International Literacy Day was established on September 8, 1965 by UNESCO, the educational branch of the United Nations. The organization says that literacy is a right and a foundation for lifelong learning, better well-being, and livelihoods.
