Skorts Are Back: The Popular '80s Fashion Hybrid is Cool Again

One surprising item invaded nearly every young woman's closet this summer: the mini skort from Zara. Skorts, a hybrid of skirts and shorts with a flap across the front, were initially popularized in the 1960s, as increasing numbers of women began playing golf. The easy movement of shorts combined with the feminine lines of a skirt continued to make skorts an activewear go-to. Everyday skorts were a wardrobe staple in the 1980s and early '90s, especially among kids, and then they disappeared. Somehow, out of nowhere, Zara single-handedly resurrected the special garment with a cool origami-style wrap. This season, the Spanish retailer has a whole new batch of skorts, and other brands at every price point, from Forever 21 to Valentino, are on board with the trend. Now, if only someone would bring back culottes. By Joanna Douglas, Yahoo Shine Senior Fashion and Beauty Editor
