The Ugliest (and Most Popular) Summer Shoes

We're drawing sandal inspiration from soccer moms, science geeks and hippies this season - ugly is in. Leandra Medine of the Man Repeller couldn't have said it any better: "It was only a matter of time before looking like a stork could no longer be rendered en vogue." So long stilettos and hello sandals. But if this seems like common sense because after all, sandals are consistent with summer - don't kid yourself. We aren't talking about the standard, floral, feminine, or even gladiator flats, if you will. Couture designers like Celine, Lanvin, Marni and Miu Miu are paying homage to retro sandal styles with mannish, flat and funky kicks á la Birkenstocks, Tevas and Adidas shower shoes. While their sex appeal and aesthetic value may be questionable, these godforsaken "sole-sisters" have one thing in common: "They all have the same brand profile. People love to hate them and hate to love them," according to Meghan Cleary, footwear expert and author of Shoe Are You? Pretty ugly or pretty, ugly - the interpretation lies in your hands (or feet).
