A Vogue Guide to Baby Gifts

By Emily Holt, Vogue magazine

Fashion girls are tricky to shop for as it is. What do you get them that they haven't already bought for themselves, and how can you possibly make sure you are matching their particular style and taste? Baby gifts are especially risky, not least because, regardless of how practical a Diaper Genie may be, we can't imagine it perched next to a Birkin on the table. With that in mind, Vogue asked Contributing Editor, Moda Operandi founder, and new mom Lauren Santo Domingo for tips on what to give and what to avoid.

"Self-addressed, stamped stationery made it a breeze to send out thank-you notes," explained Santo Domingo, "but don't go for the onesie with a punch line, it is not that funny to a mother after a particularly long or painful delivery." And as it turns out, there is one pragmatic present on Santo Domingo's list. "The Sleep Sheep [a toy animal that makes soothing sounds] Karolina Kurkova gave me was very welcome," she says. "Other moms know best."
