The 12 Essential Beauty Trends for Fall 2013

When it comes to autumnal makeup trends, dark, raisin-toned lips are ubiquitous, but at Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week, unexpected bold greens and unabashedly bright blues lit up the runway too. And as for hair, gorgeous ponytails and intricate braids were de rigueur, while nails were painted in geometric shapes and elongating nude tones. As Fall approaches, we can't wait to try all these styles, and neither should you!

  • Trend: '70s Texture: Everything old is new again, and at a handful of shows, this translated into hair reminiscent of 1970s styles. Think: Studio 54, Bianca Jagger, and a whole lot of hair spray. So break out your AquaNet. Fall 2013 is sure to be the season of big-time bouffants.

  • Trend: Woven Strands: Braids have been popular for seasons now, but in lieu of casual coifs, stylists opted for more intricate versions on the Fall 2013 runways. These looks may require some time and skill to re-create, but as you can see, the effort is worth it.

  • Trend: '90s/Downtown Grunge: This week, designers loved the '90s . . . but not the jelly sandals and Lisa Frank side many of us remember. Instead, the muse du jour was the downtown grunge chick of the decade past. Hair was loaded up on texture to look like it survived a night in a smoky club, and the makeup was done just enough to make the girls look put-together.

  • Trend: Fall Brights: Models took to the Fall 2013 runways sporting colors that had folks scratching their heads: Was it Fall or Spring we were seeing here? Tired of the moody hues of Autumn, designers, makeup artists, and nail artists were rolling out vibrant neon hues that carry through multiple seasons.

  • Trend: Ponytails: Pony up, ladies! This coming Fall, the ponytail is poised to take over as the must-have hairstyle. Whether they were pulled up high and adorned with sex tape (we'll get to that one . . . ) or slung low and dyed red, hair elastics were the essential tool in almost every hairstylist's kit.

  • Trend: Cat-Eye Makeup: Whether it was as simple as liner or a bold colorful look, New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 was all about the cat-eye shape. We saw flicked liner in traditional black, but we also saw bright shades used to form the classic shape, too. We even spotted the look done with eye shadow.

  • Trend: Matte Nails: Rich Fall nail shades are getting a update. It's all about the matte top coat for Fall for an edgier, more textured finish in the months ahead.

  • Trend: Metallic Eye Shadows: All that glitters was seen on the lids at New York Fashion Week. Whether it was dark black with glitter or barely there champagne shimmer, the trend for eyes was light-catching flecks.

  • Trend: Minimalist Makeup: One trend in makeup that will never go out of style: less is more. Backstage the artists took the no-makeup makeup approach for many shows. Lipstick and mascara were scarce in order to accommodate each model's natural beauty.

  • Trend: Mannequin Nails: The exhibitionist in you will be glad to hear that the naked nail trend will still be going strong in Fall 2013. Search for polish shades that act as a foundation for nails. The barely there nail goes with everything, and even makes chipping irrelevant.

  • Trend: Geometric Nail Art: Nail art is still huge for Fall, and we saw plenty of graphic designs that are easy to re-create. In fact, artists were able to create many of the designs backstage right on models' hands in lieu of preparing false nails prior to the show.

  • Trend: Moody Lips: It's time to revisit your darker lipsticks this Fall. We saw plenty of deep, moody lip shades, from practically black to vampy reds and tonal browns.
