Is 15 Too Young for a Bikini Wax?

When I was 15, I was more concerned with getting my braces off in time for the homecoming dance than I was with waxing. In fact, I didn't even know that salons offered bikini waxes. But Uni K Waxing Salon, which has locations in New York and Florida, is currently running a promotion offering 50 percent off all waxing services for girls 15 years old and younger. Which raises the question … when is it appropriate to start waxing?

The salon offers an answer on their blog, saying, "Our daughters and granddaughters at 11 look like we did at 14 and 15. We may try to hold back the years, but the reality is that girls are physically maturing at an earlier age, while emotionally, they are still little girls, even if they don't look like it."

While girls may be maturing at a faster rate, what about that "emotional" component mentioned in the salon's blog? Teaching tween girls that their bodies need to be fixed or changed at such a young age can only lead to further body image issues. And let's face it, young girls already face a bunch of hurdles when it comes to positive body image, with double 00 models, photoshopped magazine spreads, and flawless-looking celebs everywhere.

Do we really need 11-year-olds stressing over their "private" body hair? And do trips to the waxing salon fuel the need for even more upkeep and services like spray tanning, hair highlights, eyebrow threading, facials, and even plastic surgery?
