Lash out!
Lash out!

As the saying goes, the eyes have it…especially when adorned with gorgeous, long lashes!

Unfortunately, not all of us are born with a mass of fluttery lashes, and that's where a makeup artist's favorite accessory comes in: falsies! Today, there are countless styles on the market, from soft and natural to flirty and full to costume styles with feathers and rhinestones.

Applying Kardashian-esque lashes properly takes a bit of practice, but once you get the technique down, you may be addicted! Here's how to "lash" out in 7 simple steps:

  1. Apply your eye makeup as you normally would. Curl your lashes and add a light coat of mascara.

  2. Add a thin line of black pencil, gel, or shadow liner to the upper lash line to fill in the little gaps between each lash.

  3. Next, gently slide the false lash off the tray with your thumb. You want to avoid stretching the band.

  4. Line the lash up against your own lash line. If the strip is too long, trim a few pieces off the inside corner. Hold the ends of the lash together for a few seconds to help maintain the curved shape.

  5. Apply a thin line of the glue to the band and let dry for 30 seconds. This will prevent the lash from slipping on your lid.

  6. Place the strip on top of your lash line and press down gently. Remember to keep your eye open!

  7. Once the glue is completely dry, apply another coat of mascara to blend in and secure your lashes.

When you're ready to go au naturel, simply use eye makeup remover to break up the mascara and glue, then peel the lash off gently. Remove any dried glue from the lash strip and place it back on the tray to maintain the shape. You can get several uses out of one pair if you take care of them properly. Also, keep these "eye" mazing tips in mind:

  • If you want to have your lashes applied for you, try a M.A.C cosmetics counter. A professional artist will take the time to choose a style that flatters you face. All it takes is 10 minutes and $16, no appointment necessary. I recommend the #33 Lash (above) for a full but natural look.

  • On the fence about falsies? Take them for a test run with a self-adhesive pair, available at most drugstores.

  • Beauty supply stores also have a huge selection of spidery lashes to choose from. One of my favorites is the Ardell Eye Lashes Starter Kit. It comes with glue and a handy little applicator, all for under $7.
