The Best Makeup for Allergies

By Danielle Gray

Just when you thought you were cleared of the allergy season, here comes a whole new set of allergens in the summer months: higher pollen counts, weeds, mold, and insect bites can bring on a steady string of reactions. Summer is supposed to be all about laying on the beach, dipping in the pool, and showing off your gams in those short-shorts-not doubled over indoors nursing a box of tissue because your eyes and nose won't stop running. So what's a girl to do when all she wants is to work on her tan and stay pretty all summer but summer allergies are throwing a monkey wrench in her game?

Go makeup free

Use this time to show the world that you still look fabulous even without the war paint. Keep your brows groomed though to help frame that gorgeous face of yours. But if you can't do without makeup, try these four other tips.

Go waterproof

OK, so going makeup free may be a stretch for some of us (I just broke out in hives just thinking about going sans makeup), so try to go for makeup that's built to last. A bullet-proof, tear-proof formula like Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream, $23, can be used on the lids or as a base to prolong the wear of your eyeshadow and can also be used as liner when paired with an eyeliner brush. You can also use certain shades (like the vibrant orange ) on your cheeks and lips.

Skip mascara

If your eyes tend to get itchy, the last thing you want is huge globs of mascara smudged all over your eyes. So skip it and go for a clear mascara instead OR try It Cosmetics TIGHTLINE Full Lash Line Black Mascara Primer, $29, a very fine liner applicator that creates a super black line at the base of the lashes giving the illusion of fuller, more defined lashes. You can even wear it alone without mascara.

Hide dark circles

Another side effect of summer allergies-or lack of sleep because of a late night...well, you know what we mean-dark under eye circles. Blah. Though a good vitamin K cream will help fade their appearance over time, you'll find a quick fix in a crease-proof waterproof concealer like Lancome Effacernes Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer, $30. Seriously, just try and get it to move. ¡No puedes!

Have something to relieve insect bites

Ugh, one of the biggest downfalls to being in the great outdoors? Pesky insects trying to get a taste of our hot blood. Don't worry, you can soothe some of the pain (and alleviate sunburn, not to mention moisturize dry spots on the knees and elbows) with Josie Maran Argan Oil Moisturizing Stick, $22.
