Easiest Smoky Eye Ever

Anne-Marie Guarnieri, Allure magazine

This weekend, I'm going to a wedding and I'm super stoked, since I was the person who introduced the bride and groom in the first place. Plus, it's an evening ceremony, which gives that whole grown-up, night-on-the-town feel-and a great excuse to break out my can't-fail, super-easy smoky eye. All you need is a creamy black eye pencil-Stila Kajal Eye Liner in Onyx is my current favorite-and a small bullet-tip brush, such as Buxom's Smoky Eye Brush. Let's go!

Line your entire eye with the pencil, keeping as close to your lash line as you can. Make the line thinner at the inner corners of the eye, and thicker toward the outer ones.

Smudge the line using the brush, and keep smudging until you reach your desired level of smoke: lighter, for a subtler effect; darker if you're feeling vampy.

And that's really it! For more dimension, makeup artist Diane Kendall suggests topping off your work with a shimmery gray powder shadow, not a flat matte one. And blend the heck out of it until you get a "halo" of gray around your eyes. Also, if you're going to use a shadow, make sure you fold a tissue under your eye to catch any stray powder-you don't want it to look like you haven't slept in weeks. Add mascara if you want, or don't-sometimes I've found you don't really need it. It all depends on the look you're after.

If the whole thing takes more than five minutes, you've taken too long. Give it a try this weekend and let me know how it worked out for you.
