How to Update Your Foundation for Winter

It's that time of year: the air is dry outside and is even drier inside thanks to heaters and radiators, which can make skin a little bit weathered -- but also really outdate the current foundation you're using, both formula and shade wise. So, I checked in with Daniel Martin, an amazing makeup artist in NYC, and he gave me the scoop on how to update your foundation for winter.

There are two issues with winter, says Martin. One, you tend to be paler (there's that shade change) so you need to tweak your color choice, but, two, since said air is so dry, you need coverage that packs in hydration. He recommends Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($60). Not only is the formula hydrating, its reflective pigment also adjusts to the skin's tone so the coverage is balanced.

Another, great, brand-new option for fixing your shade are the Chromatic Mixes from Makeup Forever ($14 each). For winter, pick up a bottle in White, which lightens liquid makeup shades -- without altering the product's undertones. This is great particularly for those attached to a formula or those who still combat oily or combo skin come winter.

Also, you've gotta switch up your skincare, too: It's time to prep your mug with cream, not lotion -- even if your skin is oily. (Those with oily complexions should reach for a cream that's oil-free, such as Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream ($34). The heaviness of the cream will form a buffer between your skin and harsh, dry cold air and wind.

Not only will your skin look younger and healthier, your foundation will also go on more easily -- and last longer, too. Cake face is a thing of the past now.
