Julia Louis-Dreyfus was Told Curly Hair Isn’t Hot

Julia Louis-Dreyfus often straightens her signature curly hair.Curly hair was trendy in the '80s (hello, perms!), but nowadays many women spend countless hours and dollars smoothing and straightening their curls (think flat irons, Japanese straightening, and risky Brazilian blowouts.) We'll admit, straight hair may be lend itself to more styling options and be more manageable--especially in heat and humidity. But natural curls (not those contrived curling iron ringlets) are truly gorgeous and stand out in a crowd... which is why they're great for celebrities! Yet stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Shakira, Keri Russell, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, Debra Messing, Mariah Carey, Minnie Driver, Andie MacDowell, Elisabeth Shue, Rebecca Gayheart are constantly straightening their natural curls.

Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger always says that women (including herself) must always straighten their hair because men only are attracted to straight hair, but we know that's BS! In a new interview, "Veep" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus explains that she's encountered jerks with similar opinions about taming her curls. In an old but never-published interview with journalist Adam Baer, Julia recounts the tale from back in her old "Saturday Night Live" days when she had her hair blown out for one particular "SNL" sketch:

"[T]he following day, I was called into one of our producers' offices (as a side note, I should say that I have naturally curly hair), and he said to me, 'Julia, I got a call from a bunch of NBC executives after last night's show, and they said that after seeing your hair straight, they all wanna f--- you.' This was apparently his way of trying to entice me into straightening my hair for the rest of season. Needless to say: I was young and naïve, but I was so shocked that anyone would say anything like that, I just burst out laughing in a hysterical way. I didn't know what else to do."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in her curly-haired Seinfeld daysOf course, the joke is on that lame producer because Julia's gorgeous curls graced millions of homes every week on Seinfeld, one of the most popular shows of all time. But when she ran into that same producer, he seemed perplexed that her curly hair was back.

"[H]e said to me, 'Hey, Julia, I see they're letting you do your hair the way you want now.' That's apparently all he took away from my 'Seinfeld' contribution. The irony of it was that not only did I make my hair curly on 'Seinfeld,' which may have been a huge mistake now that I think about it, but I enhanced the curl and made it HUGE! I wonder if that hair wasn't some kind of reaction. I was saying: 'Not only is this hair going to be curly, it's going to be crazy curly. Take that, motherf-----!!'"

We love that Julia stood by her curls! Yet in recent years we've noticed her wearing her hair blown out straight more often than not. We understand the desire to frequently change up your hairstyle, but we hope she'll continue to show off her signature curls on the red carpet and on "Veep."
