How to Get Millionaire Hair

Elizabeth Siegel,Allure magazine

Women of a certain income bracket-that is, a very high one-typically have something in common besides bank balances and walk-in closets: lush, gorgeous, shiny hair. "Rich-lady hair used to be synonymous with helmet head," says hairstylist Serge Normant. "But those days are gone." Now, the most expensive-looking hair is more Kate Middleton than Queen Elizabeth. It's shiny, soft, full, and thick...and it's like that every day.

So are the 1 percenters genetically predisposed to good hair days? Hair, we're happy to report, is more democratic than that. With these expert tips for rich-looking strands, you'll be using "holiday" and "lunch" as verbs before you know it.

Getting Started

Creating opulent hair is surprisingly easy on the wallet. But first, there are a few skills you need to master-and heading directly to the salon is not one of them.

1. Building volume starts in the shower.
Shampoos and conditioners that offer styling benefits can sometimes weigh down hair, so try a basic formula, like Fekkai Advanced PrX Reparative Shampoo or Neutrogena Clean Replenishing Moisturizing Conditioner, that rinses away easily.

2. Go crazy with volumizer.
When hair is damp, mist it from roots to ends. Grab a round boar-bristle brush and douse it with the stuff. (Choose a thin brush for fine hair and a medium-size one for thicker hair.) Each time you pick up a new section of hair with the brush, fire two more spritzes at the roots. Drink it. No, just kidding-but you get the point. Normant used Serge Normant Meta Lush Volumizer for the styles on these pages.

3. Be methodical about your blowout,
working with small sections of hair that are no wider than your brush (grabbing too much is a common rookie mistake). Keep brushing and blowing each section until it's bone-dry, spinning the handle of your brush to smooth the hair.

4. Finish with shine spray on the length of the hair
(skip the roots). Try Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Nutrient Spray Dual Action Nourish+Shine. If your hair is fine, flip your head upside down and mist dry shampoo (we like Aveeno Pure Renewal Dry Shampoo) all over to add bulk without turning the top layers matte and dull, says Normant.
