In 2009, when Jacob Philadelphia and his brother, Isaac, were each given the chance to ask newly elected President Obama one question, Isaac inquired about fighter jets. And Jacob? He was curious about the president's hair.
"I want to know if my hair is just like yours," the boy told Obama.
"Why don't you touch it and see for yourself?" Obama replied, lowering his head, encouraging the hesitant 5-year-old by saying: "Touch it, dude!"

Although the image, captured by White House photographer Pete Souza, has been hanging in the West Wing for three years, the "New York Times" just filled everyone in on the back story, and it's quickly become their "most emailed" article.

Why does such a simple photo evoke such an emotional reaction? Is it seeing the most powerful man in the world literally bending over to help a little boy? Is it the fact that the question of hair had occurred to the boy in the first place? Is it the implication of race? Probably a little of all three. And then some.
