Three Easy (And Low-Maintenance) Ways to Cover Gray Hair

A friend of mine had twins recently, which caused her hair to go gray virtually overnight. Needless to say, if she doesn't have time to eat a hot meal, she's not going to have tons of time to visit a salon. But since she does care about covering those honorable but unwanted grays, she asked for my help. (I'm not exactly babysitter material, so this was the least I could do.)

"Covering grays is tricky because there is always one strand hiding somewhere you can't see it-like the back of your head," says Johnny Lavoy, hairstylist and L'Oréal Paris consulting hair expert. Here, Lavoy and Bumble and Bumble colorist Tzipi tell us the easiest and most effortless ways to color gray hair, both in the salon and at home:
Easy:
"At the salon, ask for highlights or a few foils, staying in the blonde family if possible, just following the whole crown area and where the part is, and also the sides," Tzipi says. "It cuts down the amount of highlights you would normally do, and less is more when it comes to maintenance."
Easier:
"You could just have your colorist cover the individual gray strands," says Tzipi, to match your natural color, rather than dye your whole head. It'll also be faster than getting a traditional single process. "And when it grows in, you won't have those obvious roots."

Easiest:
"Home hair color in mousse form is genius because it's foolproof to apply and catches all the grey hairs no matter where they are," says Lavoy. "L'Oréal Paris makes one called Sublime Mousse-you just massage it in like shampoo." Best of all: no salon visits required.
