Fact: No one wears a bold lipstick quite likeLupita Nyong'o. Last night at an event in West Hollywood, the star kept her penchant for vivid hues going by contrasting her floral Giambattista Valli number with a hot pink lip. "I opted for colors that are soft and pastel, but to keep it chic and sophisticated, we used them in small doses," her makeup artist Nick Barose tells InStyle.com exclusively. He began by workingLancome's Colour Design in Boundless Blue ($25;lancome-usa.com) all over her lids, and used a small brush to trace the creme shadow along her lower lash line. "Very simple application, but the sheer, pearlized color and texture add subtle drama. All you really need to add is a few coats of black mascara," he advises.

Barose amped up the effect by pairing the metallic hue with a hot pink lip. Thanks to the transparent formula, the effect wasn't overpowering. "I applied Lancome's La Laque Fever in Electric Pink ($27;lancome-usa.com). It's easy to wear because of the soft sheen," he says. "Apply one coat all over, then add a second coat just on the center of the lips to add more shine." If you're pairing a high-impact shadow with a vivid lip, follow the star's lead and mix up your textures so the finished look doesn't come on too strong. Use a light hand when applying the products, and stick to sheer washes of color that you can build on for more drama - it's always easier to add more of the hue, than to go back and correct a too-heavy finish.
