Try these simple and mindful tips to avoid going overboard this holiday season:

1. Pack one or two healthy snacks
Pack one or two healthy snacks to bring to the office so you won't be so tempted by the pile of cookies in the kitchen.

2. Taste everything, eat nothing
Sample everything you want and choose the dishes that are most meaningful, don't just take a roll because it's in front of you. Approach holiday buffets with the idea of sampling anything you want. A bite here and a nibble there will allow you to try everything being offered, without settling on one huge mound of any single dish.

3. Eat before you go to any party
If you eat a 200-calorie high-protein snack before a party, like hummus and pita chips, you won't grab for the hors d'oeuvres as soon as you arrive because you've starved yourself. If you must peck, though, here are some of the better options: Red peppers: They are low in calories and offer a lot of essential nutrients. Shrimp: High in protein, they help turn off your body's hunger mechanism. Broccoli: This green veggie is full of fiber that helps fill you up fast.

4. When it comes to the cocktails
I recommend sticking to a two-drink maximum; it is best to pace yourself and alternate cocktails with a water, sparkling water or a non-alcoholic beverage. Your body will thank you in the morning.

5. Be prepared
You are shopping all day long in a mall or running around town and fast food options are everywhere. You many be starving, but instead of grabbing for the cheap and easy, try packing some whole grain and fruit options to keep you satisfied throughout the day.

6. Embrace the season!
Go outside and participate in winter activities like ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing or a walk through the snow with your kids.

The holidays are about celebrating with the people you love and indulging in special treats, so enjoy this time of the year and use these easy tips to stay on track!
