Delicious Christmas food - it's almost as essential to a happy holiday as Santa Claus himself! But sugar cookies like those on the left don't just bake out of thin air. With so many culinary possibilities, the first step is making sure your kitchen is stocked with the essentials. We've gathered seven important ingredients no home should be without this winter. Did we miss any that you consider essential?

1. Cinnamon

The holidays would be downright bland without a dash of cinnamon. This ever-popular spice can be used in all kinds of baking projects, from muffins to cakes and frosting.

2. Nuts

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire," the Nutcracker - you get where we're headed. Pecans and walnuts are the most popular additions to holiday recipes, but having an assortment on-hand is ideal. Whether you include them in your meal or set out a bowl for snacking, this ingredient has a big part to play during the holidays.

3. Flour

We're sure you're already aware of the importance of flour, but you'd hate to run low when you really need it. Breads, pie crusts, sauces and cookies all depend on fresh flour as their foundation. Check to make sure yours is still good to go. If it smells sour, it's time to buy a new batch.

4. Sugar

Has it really taken this long to get around to sugar? It's another obvious choice, but so critical that we'd be remiss to ignore it. Guests expect (and deserve) some sweet holiday fare, so don't leave them with a lump of coal on their plates!

5. Eggs

Just like flour, eggs are essential for baking. It's a good idea to double-up on cartons during this prime season. Any leftovers can be served-up for a delicious dose of protein at breakfast.

6. In-season Veggies

Through the magic of modern refrigeration, you can get almost any produce you need all year long. But there are definite advantages to in-season fruits and veggies. Not only are they super-fresh and at their peak flavor, but are often easier on the wallet as well. This time of year, look for fresh Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, pumpkin, kale and broccoli.

7. Garlic, Onions and Shallots

Make sure to load up on these base flavorings for many savory dishes! Garlic, onions and shallots are important for sides and entreés alike. They often provide that extra "oomph" that separates a good dish from a great one.
