Bacon Dogs Are Here! Thanks, Oscar Mayer

It's as if they read the minds of bacon lovers everywhere: Oscar Mayer on Monday introduced five new hot dogs, one of which has bacon cooked right into it.

"No one knows bacon like Oscar Mayer," Jared Baker, director of Oscar Mayer hot dogs, said in a statement. "We know Americans love bacon, and we know they love hot dogs, so it seemed like the perfect time for us to introduce our first hot dog made with bacon."

"It is hitting store shelves this week in time for Memorial Day," Sydney S. Lindner, associate director of corporate affairs at Kraft Foods, told Yahoo! Shine on Tuesday. They will be available throughout the United States.

Bacon lovers were overjoyed.

"Most everything is better with bacon on it!!" exclaimed David Ware on the company's Facebook page. "Sounds yummy need to go look for it."

"Oh noes! I'm trying to avoid processed meats and they invent this!?" Jennifer Bourne commented. "Well played, Oscar Meyer, well played…"

Others were simply thankful.

"I knew there was a God," quipped Facebook user Daniel Boone.

"This is the best thing I have ever seen," @xDRainbows Tweeted.

Some bacon fans had a few suggestions for ways Oscar Meyer could make a good idea even better.

"Bacon and cheese hot dogs would be awesome," Tammy Drury commented on Facebook.

"Beef, bacon and cheese," suggested Ruth Sanders (with a heart symbol for emphasis).

True bacon aficionados were quick to notice that the new hot dogs aren't made entirely out of bacon; the ingredient list includes mechanically separated turkey, chicken, and pork as well as bacon pieces. The packaging promises no artificial colors, fillers, or by-products, but does disclose that additional smoke flavor is added.

Not counting the bun, Oscar Mayer's new bacon dogs clock in at 130 calories and have 11 grams of fat, 35 milligrams of cholesterol, and 270 milligrams of sodium each. That makes a couple of bacon dogs better for you than a McDonald's Big Mac (550 calories, 29 grams of fat, 75 milligrams of cholesterol, 970 milligrams of sodium).

Oscar Mayer's other new hot dog offerings are much tamer: a gluten-free chicken-breast hot dog, bigger versions of Smokies smoked sausages, lite hot dogs, and fat-free hot dogs.
