Better and More Fun Than Domino's and Pizza Hut: 6 Easy Pizza Recipes to Make at Home

Homemade Pizza
Homemade Pizza

Sometimes there is nothing better than a night spent at home watching movies and eating pizza. Especially now that the weather is becoming a bit cooler, staying in seems to more appealing than ever. But why wait for a pizza delivery when they are so easy (and more delicious) to make at home?

The Cook editors at The Daily Meal love making homemade pizza. The toppings and choices are endless and using store-bought pizza dough makes it quick and simple. This week we put the Culinary Content Network and our staff to the test to come up with homemade pizza recipes that rival takeout. Here are some of the submissions.

Christine Ma from Cherry on My Sundae turned pizza into breakfast with bacon and a fried egg. Ma is a member of the Culinary Content Network.

Peter Block of Feed Your Soul 2 shared with us his recipe for Creole Pizza, which is topped with a spicy sauce and Andouille sausage. Block is a member of the Culinary Content Network.

The winner this week is Haley Willard, associate editor at The Daily Meal. Haley's Presto Pesto Pizza is a healthier alternative made with whole-wheat dough.

All of the recipes featured can be made at home for about $20 or less, excluding the cost of small amounts of basic ingredients such as butter, oil, flour, sugar, salt, pepper, and other dried herbs and spices.

Four-Onion Pizza with Goat Cheese Recipe

For this recipe, I wanted to celebrate the many shades of onions. By combining these four different varieties with a generous serving of fresh goat cheese, one could not dream up a more agreeable smathering of toppings.

INGREDIENTS

1 portion of pizza dough at room temperature
8 ounces shallots, thinly sliced
4 ounces fresh goat cheese
1/2 bunch chives, thinly sliced
3 leeks, white parts only, sliced thinly
1 Dash of red pepper flakes
5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 yellow onion

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Place yellow onion and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a medium skillet and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally for about 20 minutes, or until onions are soft and caramelized.

Meanwhile, flatten pizza dough with your fingertips on a lightly floured surface. Forming a rectangle, continue to stretch the dough until it is about 12 inches long and 8 inches wide, or slightly smaller than a standard-size baking pan. Transfer the dough carefully to parchment-paper-lined baking sheet or pan. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 ounces of goat cheese, and red pepper flakes evenly atop the dough. Bake for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, turn the heat up to medium and add leeks and shallots. Cook 5-10 minutes or until the onions have softened.

After 10 minutes of baking, remove pizza dough from oven. Top with onion mixture and remaining goat cheese, then sprinkle with chives. Bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until brown and crisp at edges.

Bon appetit!
