Many say home is where the heart is and I believe that to be true. Even though I have planted my roots here in Texas, I always have a fondness for travel. My home is not only located in the Piney Woods, but also across the globe. People have the ability to make you feel at home wherever you are. One such place for my first article in the series is What About Kabob & His Gyros.

Who would have thought this upbeat find would be located off of Loop 323 in a strip mall located in Tyler, Texas? I have had my fair share of Gyros and crave a good bite or two when I make it to San Diego but to find this jewel in East Texas was truly a blessing. When you first walk in, the interior screams this is the trendy place to be. From the vibrant blue and yellow walls to the checkered floor and upbeat music, What About Kabob & His Gyros is the place to be any night of the week. The service is very friendly and if you order in, they serve you pita chips and humus. I know, pita chips and humus, right?

From Gyro burgers, which my uncle ordered, to your classic Gyro, What About Kabob & His Gyros excites the palate. It does not stop there, not one bit! During certain times of the week, they offer Mixers featuring hip young artist, chefs, wine tasting, plus more! I couldn't let this spot pass me by nor ignore the bright yellow and blue sign that invited us in. But what really got me interested was a neighborhood store owner that I would hound daily about selling Middle Eastern food. Instead his suggestion was the best thing ever!

The owner, Master Chef Joe Nartia, grew up in Germany and learned much of the Mediterranean style cooking as a child. He's a laid back fellow who treats anything new like a work of art. Because of his passion for good food, music, and talent, he has brought many people to his hip spot; building Tyler's economy.

Gyro Platter. The platter comes with homemade seasoned fries, a side salad and gyro meat served with pita chips!!! Of course that is feta cheese, honey! Anything else would be uncivilized!

If ever you are in town, one place I definitely suggest you check out is What About Kabob & His Gyros. I give them a 5 out of 5 for food, fun, and flavor! Don't forget to sign the wall and tell them Shani sent you. You will not be disappointed.
