Homemade Graham Crackers: DIY for Your Next Campfire


Sure, you can buy a box of graham crackers at the store, but there is something this season of S'mores that makes the homemaking of graham crackers so much cooler. If you're looking for a great way to personalize your next party or picnic, try serving up s'mores on the homemade grahams. The best part about making them yourself is that you can cut them into any shape you please. We went for simple circles, but don't let that stop you from making Circus Animal Grahams or Heart Shaped S'mores! The flavor of these delicious crackers is rich and buttery, a perfect snack for a summer's day!

Homemade Graham Crackers

  • 2 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher or coarse sea salt

  • 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold

  • 1/3 cup honey

  • 5 tablespoons whole milk

  • 2 tablespoons vanilla

In a food processor fitted with the blade attachment, mix together the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Begin to add the butter, a few slices at a time, until mixture is coarse and crumbly.

Whisk the honey, milk, and vanilla extract together. Slowly begin to pulse it into the flour mixture. Scrape the dough from the food processor, press it into a large flat oval, cover it with parchement and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a rolling pin to thinly roll the refrigerated dough into a floured work surface. Cut into your favorite shapes with a cookie cutter, or into rectangles using a pizza cutter. Transfer cut cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Pierce several decorative dots into each graham cracker with the bottom of a skewer. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool completely before serving or storing.
