It is National S'Mores Day!

August 10 is National S'Mores Day. Thankfully, this "holiday" is an easy one to digest (pun intended in every way, because really, the last thing I need is another holiday to plan for).

Why celebrate S'mores? Tradition and pure yumminess. If there is anything that instantly elicits the thought of a summer camping vacation is has to be S'Mores. It's an American campfire tradition that dates back to the 1920's and it is rumored to have been started by the Girl Scouts. In it's most basic format the S'mores consist of two pieces of graham crackers which sandwich a layer of chocolate and a fire-roasted, melt-y marshmallow.

Want to also pay homage to this traditional summer treat and not just today, but for the remainder of the summer? Here are some ideas:

The Classic S'mores - Delicious in its most basic format: boxed graham crackers, store-bought marshmallows and forever classic Hershey chocolate! We've just returned from the 2011 BlogHer Conference where Hershey created a very inviting S'mores lounge for conference attendees to sample (I blame some of my weight gain to visiting this booth). We loved the S'mores party platter presentation and definitely thought this was an idea to take home. Here's a S'mores platter that you can find on Amazon. The mini grill is a great substitute when you can't conjure up your own campfire.

Decadent Recipes: Recipes - Wanna DIY the gourmet S'mores in your own home? Sunset Magazine has seven great recipes here. My pick? The Caramel-Drizzles S'mores. Never enough caramel. Ever.

Truffle Truffle S'Mores - More on the foodie side? Consider the magnificent housemade s'mores by Truffle Truffle in all sorts of creative flavors like Root Beer Float, Lemon Rosemary, Strawberry Basil to name just a few of the tantalizing choices. "Housemade marshmallows are infused with delicious flavor combinations, sandwiched between flaky shortbread cookies and then enrobed in the finest milk or dark chocolate." Heaven. Hand-Crafted S'mores Kit by Three Tarts - Artisanal vanilla marshmallows combine with graham chocolate chip cookies. Presented with skewers and matches in a reusable tin. Makes a great hostess gift (especially if visiting someone's cottage). The kit makes 9 s'mores. Buy at Foodzie for $19.00.
