The ways supermarket shopping can sabotage your diet

Supermarket sabotaging your diet? Hungry Girl has got some tips that will get you in and out of there safely...

Don't shop when you're hungry...

We know, you've heard it before, but this needs to be repeated. Sure, you might have that trusty grocery list in your purse, but it's amazing how quickly you forget about it when your stomach does the shopping.

Avoid the items in the front...

Have you ever noticed how the front of the market tends to be filled with the scent of delicious goodies like freshly baked treats and ready-made meals that seem to call your name? It's intentional, people! And although we're all for fresh food, we're not fans of fatty stuff like apple pies and fried chicken. Avoid the bakery and hit up the deli for some fruit salad and lean meats.

Specials aren't always worth it...

"But it's buy-one-get-one-free, Hungry Girl!" Is saving money costing you loads of extra calories? Read labels to be sure. And don't buy what you don't really want or need.

Steer clear of the samples...

What is it about humans and free stuff? Just one or two samples is fine, but remember, every bite counts. Keep track of 'em. You'll be surprised how quickly those tastes add up.

Crown yourself shopping queen...

Make sure YOU are the one doing the grocery shopping for your home. Yes, it's nice to send someone else for a change, but he or she might bring back something you can't resist. Be a control freak -- it's okay.

Leave the kids at home...

If you have kids, try to shop when they're otherwise occupied. Supermarkets love to put sugary treats down low, at their eye level, because they're counting on you to give in to kiddo demands (especially when they let out that awful wail that has everyone in the store staring at you).

Don't check out the check-out...

So you've managed to stick to your shopping list and fill your cart with guilt-free food. You're home-free, right? Not quite. Now it's time to pay, and we all know there are way too many dangers at the register. If you must buy something there (we know, those candy bars look SO good) stick to gum/mints and cheesy gossip mags -- you might wind up consumed with the latest Hollywood drama, but at least you won't be consuming extra calories!
