1. Rice

This versatile side dish can be jazzed up by cooking in chicken broth instead of water or adding frozen vegetables five minutes before it's done.

2. Pasta

Keep both long and short pasta on hand. Long is better for "saucier" pasta sauces while short works best with chunky sauces.

3. Canned Beans

Chickpeas and white, black and kidney beans are an easy way to add protein to a variety of dishes.

4. Canned Tomatoes

Whole and diced are equally useful, while the varieties with added chiles are a quick way to add flavor.

5. Spices

Flavorful meals are simple with a well-stocked spice cabinet. Along with salt and pepper, keep cumin, paprika, oregano, cinnamon, chili powder and Cajun seasoning on hand.

7. Vinegar

Balsamic, red and white wine and cider vinegars all keep well and make delicious and different salad dressings.

8. Mustard

9. Jam and Marmalade

As well as topping toast, fruity spreads make great glazes for meat and fish before broiling or grilling, or as the base of stir-fry sauces.

10. Low-Sodium Chicken Broth
