Are Hydrating Mists Necessary?

By India-Jewel Jackson,Glamour magazine

As a beauty writer, my apartment is littered with all kinds of products, from the incredibly useful to the slightly ridiculous to the 'is-this-really-even-necessary?!'... One of the items that can easily be classified under the former and the latter categories is hydrating mist/water sprays. (My ex-boyfriend couldn't understand why I wouldn't just pour a gallon of Poland Spring into an old Windex bottle. Le sigh. Clearly boys just don't understand these types of things.)

Most people use 'water-in-a-can' sprays to cool off irritated, overheated skin during the sweltering summer, but I've actually found a few other great year-round uses:

1) They're great for loosening up tight skin. After washing my face, my skin feels super tense and incredibly dry, so I liberally spritz on one of my hydrating mists as a pre-moisturizer to soothe and prep my skin to better absorb my serum.

2) They're awesome for toning down makeup. I can be a bit heavy-handed when it comes to rouge because my complexion is so deep. Whenever I over-apply my blush, I simply mist my cheeks with a water spray to help the excess color die down a bit quicker.

3) They're great for quick-washing your hair. My good friend Daisy Curbeon is a feature film hairstylist (she's currently working on Men In Black III), and she taught me to always travel with a bottle in my suitcase. If my destination has hard water, my curls will not respond well, so in lieu of actually washing my hair in the shower, I can dampen my mane over the sink with a hydrating mist to refresh and revive my strands, and lather up whenever I return home.
