How to: Stylish low ponytail

Long hair looks lovely floating free but when you want a super-chic look, you can't go wrong with a low ponytail. You can personalize this fab do by pairing it with perky bangs, adding tiny braids or covering the band with your own hair. Whichever way you decide to wear it, you must master creating the perfect low ponytail first. For the ultimate sleek look, tame wavy or curly hair before cinching it back. Swipe a hot flat iron over your locks to smooth them out. This makes your hair lay flat and looks simply classic.

Step 1: Squirt a dime-sized amount of shine serum or frizz control product into the palm of your hand. (If you hair tends to be oily, you can skip this step.) Rub it into the hair starting at the roots and working upwards.

Step 2: Brush the hair with a boar-bristle paddle brush, working out knots and tangles. If you have bangs, smooth them out of the way with your fingers.

Step 3: Gather the hair at the nape or base of the neck with one hand, then secure it with a ponytail holder using the other. Wrap the holder two or three times but don't make it too tight.

Step 4: Check the position of the ponytail using a hand mirror and your bathroom mirror. Adjust the ponytail by tugging it slightly to the left or right as needed.

Step 5: Spray the paddle brush lightly with blast of hairspray. Brush the surface of the ponytail using a soft touch. This will smooth down the fly-aways.

Step 6: Apply an even veil of hairspray over your entire head. Allow the spray to dry for one minute before touching it.

Don't forget to add cool accessories like a decorative bobby pin or a velvet-covered headband.
