5 Key Rules to Getting Your Makeup to Stay Put in the Heat

The magazines make summer makeup look so easy -the pictures show models wearing beautiful eye shadow colors and smear-free lipstick, sans sweat beads or running mascara. Unfortunately, not all our of summer soirees take place indoors in the coolness of an air-conditioned room. Being outside in the sweltering heat definitely gives our makeup routines a run for their money, but with these five key rules, you'll be able to keep a matter finish all day long.

Don't Fight the Elements
"Loading up on powder can make you look cakey as the heat takes its toll," says Victoria's Secret makeup artist Meredith Baraf. "Instead, make the glow work for you. Use a tinted moisturizer, powder your T-zone a bit, and put some blotting papers in your bag for the day. I love using cream blush and bronzer in the summer too to keep your skin looking healthy and natural. A little goes a long way in the heat."

Become a Minimalist
When battling the heat of summer, it's never too soon to adopt the "less is more" attitude. "Face makeup is best kept at a minimum," says L.A.-based makeup artist and brow/lash Juliana Landis. "I suggest using a concealer only where needed, to cover under-eye circles and redness around the nose and mouth area. Use a cheek stain on your cheeks to add freshness to your skin, and add a glow with bronzer to areas where the sun hits the face (forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin). Make sure to blend your face makeup perfectly, and finish by patting with blotting paper." Related: Best Cooling Beauty Products

Go Easy on the Eyes
"Stay away from dark, smoky eyes," says Landis. "It can look extremely harsh in the summer. Black kohl pencils are a big no-no, as they tend to melt and run in the heat (you are guaranteed to look like a panda by the end of the day!)." Instead, use more natural shades like golds and browns to play up your eyes, and don't forget the importance of eye shadow primer! Related: How to Pull of Bright Makeup
