Bathroom Hygiene Tips for Moms of Toddlers

Like many moms, I feel like I spend a lot of time cleaning. From crumbs on the floor to dirty laundry, I am constantly scrubbing, washing and vacuuming. With two little ones in the house, the bathroom can get especially messy. Toothpaste dribble, potty training accidents and puddles of water are all too familiar for me. Yet, sometimes those invisible germs bother me most. Since I am a little bit of a germaphobe, I try to keep the bathroom as clean as possible. These bathroom hygiene tips for moms of toddlers will help you have a healthy household.

The Right Spot

It can be very messy when a toddler misses the toilet. As someone who has tried a lot of kid-potties, I think a flip potty seat is the best option. After all, being able to easily and quickly get on the potty is half of the battle. You also need to make sure your child is sitting in the middle of the toilet. Finally, for easy clean up, keep some flushable wipes near the toilet.

Target Practice

For boys, a target or toilet decal is helpful to aim at while going to the bathroom. This prevents stray urine from getting on the floor, the wall and the shower curtain. Target practice is also helpful for kids when they are brushing their teeth. All you have to do is ask your child to spit into a cup or at a decal placed near the drain.

Foaming Soap

It's hard for me to keep gel soap from dripping onto the sink. Foam soap rinses off much easier. In addition, if kids drop some on the sink, it easily washes away. I try to pick fun flavors and scents to encourage my children to wash their hands. After all, good hand washing is essential to preventing illness.

Toothbrush

Toothbrushes need to stay clean, which is why our family has invested in toothbrush covers. The covers just slip over the bristles. Furthermore, it prevents toddlers from getting toothpaste on the counter if the toothbrush falls over. Another trick is to purchase a toddler toothbrush with a suction cup on the bottom. This ensures that the toothbrush will stay upright rather than falling onto the ground or into the sink.

Daily Shower Cleaner

By using a daily shower cleaner after every bath, the bathtub will stay free of mold, mildew and soap-scum. However, it is important to pick a cleanser that is plant-based, non-toxic and free of harmful chemicals. I want my children to be in a clean, chemical-free environment.

Sanitizing Wipes

In the past, we have had playgroup at our house. The thought of half a dozen toddlers and preschoolers using the bathroom heightens my germ radar. Thus, after everyone leaves, I make sure to wipe down the sink, toilet seat and all handles with a sanitizing wipe. This really makes a difference during cold and flu season.

Toddlers may be messy. However, that doesn't mean your bathroom has to be!
