Fernandes says that one of the main things to focus on when camping is sleeping, especially when you're camping with young children. She recommends a thick sleeping pad that's supported, even when on the ground. In addition, she suggests a fluffy sleeping bag that will make you feel "like you're at home in your comforter." Finally, bring a comfortable tent that is the right size and shape for your family.

When it comes to food, you can keep it simple with a small stove or you can bring equipment that can help you feed a larger group. According to Fernandes, another easy option is pre-made food that is both easy and filling. It comes in a variety of options and you can even find organic brands. You just have to add water.

There are many outdoor activities that you and your family can do while camping. "You can go bird watching, you can go hiking, you can teach them about insects and plants," says Fernandes.

If your family is planning a hike or two, make sure that you have the essentials [http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html]. These include a well-fitting backpack, illumination, sun block, matches (rather than a lighter), toilet paper, and navigation. "If you don't know how to use a map and compass, before you go out there is a great time to learn," says Fernandes.

At the end of your trip, remember the motto "leave no trace." Leave the campsite cleaner than you found it and remove all trash. Also, make sure you've extinguished any fires. "Fires can actually burn for a long time, even overnight if you don't extinguish them properly," says Fernandes.
