Five Money-Saving Tips for Cleaning the Bathroom

So many people dread cleaning the bathroom, but if you're willing to get creative, it doesn't have to be scary. On this episode of "Easy Does It," Bahar Takhtehchian, editor-at-large of Shape Magazine, offers five tricks to save you time and money.

If your shower head is getting clogged with buildup, look no farther than your pantry. Simply take a plastic sandwich bag, fill it with white vinegar, and tie it around the shower head. Leave it overnight, and in the morning, it will be shiny and residue-free. "It works like magic overnight," Bahar says.

Bahar's second tip is perfect for glass shower doors that get cloudy. Sprinkle a dryer sheet with a few drops of water, and scrub the glass door with the sheet. "You're going to get rid of all the soap scum and residue, and it's going to be nice and clear," she says.

There's no need for harsh chemicals to remove a dirt ring from your bathtub. Simply cut a grapefruit in half, and sprinkle the grapefruit and your bathtub with coarse salt. Use the grapefruit to scrub. "It's going to get rid of any residue and any dirt, and of course it's going to smell so amazing, too," Bahar says.

Another great chemical-free cleaning solution can work magic in the toilet: denture-cleaning tabs. Place one tab in the toilet and let it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub lightly, and your toilet will be clean. "This is a great alternative to bleach and detergents," she explains.

Finally, if you use hairspray in the bathroom, you might be left with a sticky residue on the walls and tile. Mix one part rubbing alcohol with two parts water and a bit of dish detergent and pour into a spray bottle. Spray it on wallpaper, tile, and countertops and wipe with a washcloth.
