Importance of Cheering on Your Kids

Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents that were deeply involved in my life. They cheered for me during softball games, applauded proudly at every dance recital, and took me out for ice cream after every high school art show and awards ceremony. I'm not even embarrassed to say (okay, maybe a little) that my mom even recently surprised me with flowers after my latest big accomplishment at work - and I'm 30 years old!

As a kid, I knew how it felt to be supported and encouraged by your parents. Now that I have two young children of my own, I understand the importance of cheering on your kids in all aspects of their lives - from sports, to school and even in the little everyday things. Here's why it's so important to be cheering on your kids in:

1. Sports and activities

Every child needs a #1 fan! No matter their age, every kid wants to hear support, shameless cheering and encouragement when it's their turn at the plate. Even if the crowd or their teammates are cheering, it's so much more special coming from the ones they love. Make a point to attend your child's games or activities and cheer loudly for them; they may act embarrassed, but, secretly they're enjoying the attention. And trust me, they'll remember your loyalty and support for the rest of their lives.

2. School

Make a point to find out what academic subject your child is good at - whether it's art, Spanish, physics or spelling - and encourage, encourage, encourage them in this area. Every person, whether child or adult, needs to feel that they're good at something. Help your child grow by developing their talent, and then instilling in them a sense of accomplishment. For the school subjects your child has trouble with, continue to encourage and help them grow. Let them know you're their biggest fan, even if they don't receive As in every subject.

3. Life

Years ago, before my grandfather passed away, I used to call him when I had exciting news or accomplishments to share. He would always answer with, "I never had any doubts that you could do it." His complete, unwavering confidence always stuck with me, giving me the reassurance that I could do anything I aspired to.

Cheering on your child in everyday life, even the little things, is so important to their sense of overall confidence. When your kids know that you believe in them 100%, their self-assurance, conviction, and determination soar, leaving little room for self-doubt and worry.

No matter the age of your children, kids need to be supported. Do your best to be that parent that's present and cheering at every game, ceremony, recital, and even around the dining room table. Talk to your children, and encourage them in their efforts. When you do, you'll be rewarded with an enjoyable relationship with your kids that gives them all the support and self-confidence they need for the years ahead.
