North West Already Has a Busier Social Schedule Than Most Adults, but Why?

By Lauren Le Vine, REDBOOK.

My brother and his wife recently had their first child. Since he emerged into the world (two weeks early), he had a big family party, went to the pediatrician a few times, accompanied his parents to their favorite sushi place, traveled to JFK to pick up his grandfather, attended his first Mandarin class, and on Thursday, he'll sit for his first portrait session. He's an eight-day-old baby with a busier schedule than most adults I know, and it seems like he's not alone in his hustle.

According to Us Weekly, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West not only took their new daughter, North, to a Fourth of July party, she's also got a packed social agenda. "Kim has taken North on a few playdates, but she can't do it with lots of people since she's still so small," a source told the magazine. Yes, it would be hard to play with blocks if you're sleeping all the time, what with just having been born and all that.

It won't be long before North is spending time with her dad's collaborator and friend Jay-Z's daughter, Blue Ivy. If she can pin her down, that is. Mom Beyoncé posts adorable pictures of Blue on her Tumblr, and it appears the one-year-old is already following in her jet-setting parents' footsteps. One day she's at a Brooklyn playground; another, she's sporting an impressive crown backstage at one of mom's shows. Still, baby Blue's life is relatively normal when it comes to doing age-appropriate activities. She goes to all those places because that's where her parents are, but when they're there, they still scope out the nearest park.

As for North and my nephew, I need to go all "get off my lawn!" for a second. I know people have been asking when we stopped letting kids be kids for years now, but have we also stopped infants from being infants? Even if you bring an eight-day-old to Mandarin lessons and a three-week-old on a playdate, they're probably going to sleep the entire time. Also, they don't know much about the world yet, so it might be a good idea as parents to become their first worldview. It's great to be social and want to broaden your new baby's horizons (I'm all for my brother and sister-in-law giving their son all the advantages they can, but did I mention they don't actually speak Mandarin?), but there comes a point when you're just trotting out your new baby for your amusement.

Then again, my nephew could become bilingual by the time he's one and a diplomat to China by two. North West will probably have her own clothing line at five. I'm drawing the line at baby calculus class, though.
