Quick Ways to Make Hair More Lustrous

Having a glorious head of hair has always been a top priority for many women. Shiny, lustrous hair is not only pretty to behold -- it's a sign of good health and proper hygiene. Unfortunately, toxins floating around in the air, heating products and over-washing can lead to hair that's less than ideal. Whether you're dealing with fried and frizzy to lackluster and limp, sometimes hair just needs a pick-me-up.

In no particular order, here are 5 tips that will do just that:

Do Monthly Hot Oil Treatments

Walk into your kitchen, open the pantry door and select a rich oil, such as extra virgin olive oil, pure coconut oil or even avocado oil. Warm it up to body temperature in the microwave, apply it to your hair, cover with plastic wrap or a cap and let it set for 45 minutes to an hour. Rinse out with shampoo and voila -- your hair will instantly be shinier and healthier looking. Repeat this once a month.

Get Enough Vitamin D

According to a report in the Archives of Internal Medicine , experts believe that approximately 3/4 of Americans have a vitamin D deficiency. While you should meet your daily vitamin D requirements for various health reasons, getting enough also promotes stronger, healthier hair. Because vitamin D isn't commonly found in foods, the best way to get it is via the sun or in the form of a supplemental vitamin.

Use Less Shampoo

By now, everyone knows you shouldn't wash your hair every single day. Doing so strips your hair of important oils, makes the shaft more porous, removes hair color and can, in general, make your locks much more dull. What many people don't realize, though, is that when you do wash your hair (say every 2 to 3 days), you shouldn't use gobs and gobs of shampoo. Stick to a small amount and really work up a lather.

Brush with Boar Bristle

An all-natural boar bristle brush make be more expensive than a $0.50 comb, but your hair will thank you for the investment. Boar bristle brushes are gentle on your hair and also help distribute your hair's natural oils all the way down the shaft. Brush only after your hair is dry. If your hair tangles after showering, use a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray and use your fingers.

Finish Off With a Shine Spray

This one's kind of a cheat, but that's no matter. After you've finished polishing your hair do for the day, lightly coat your hair with a sheer layer of shine spray. This will seal the hair and prevent frizz, make your hair look glossier and will also help keep your hair in place. You can find shine sprays and sealants at pretty much any store that sells hair products.
