User post: Why Not A Potluck Thanksgiving?

I had only been married for a year when we moved out of state, away from my family. Being a young couple, we didn't have much money, so travelling back to visit my family for Thanksgiving was not a possibility. For the first time, we spent Thanksgiving with my husband's extended family.

My family is fairly small. It was just me, my parents, and my brother. My grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles are spread across the country, so Thanksgiving was usually just my immediate family. On the contrary, my husband comes from a large extended family (40+ cousins!) and most of them live within an hours drive of one another. Needless to say, their Thanksgiving was different from the one I was used to celebrating.

Besides all the people, the biggest difference between my husband's family's Thanksgiving and my family's Thanksgiving was the food. The basic meal was the same: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and so on, BUT one family wasn't responsible for all of it. Every family brought a dish or two to contribute to the meal.

Because every family brought something for the Thanksgiving meal, we ended up with quite a spread. It was fun to try every one's different offerings. On top of that, everyone got to help and feel like part of the meal, lifting the burden of the preparation the host.

Most importantly, when everyone brings a Thanksgiving dish, it lifts the financial burden off all families involved. Preparing an entire Thanksgiving meal for one family can be very expensive. With all the other financial obligations these days, why not combine the fellowship of family while saving money at the same time and have a potluck Thanksgiving?

Even if you aren't surrounded by family, you can have a potluck Thanksgiving with your friends. With families spread across the country, oftentimes your friends become like family. Having a potluck Thanksgiving is a great way to get everyone involved, try a variety of new foods, and save money during this expensive time of year.
