Madonna Pop-Up Exhibit Showcases Iconic Outfits

They don't call her a "Material Girl" for nothing! Since the '80s, Madonna has been known as much for her fashion sense as she has been for her music. On Thursday, April 25th, the superstar can add a new notch to her impressive belt of achievements (in our minds this belt is a literal one, and it says "BOY TOY" right in the middle) with the launch of her first ever "Fashion Evolution" pop-up showcase. Macy's has collaborated with Madge herself as well as her successful junior's clothing line, Material Girl, to bring the most iconic pieces of her wardrobe to the Century City Macy's for a one-day exhibit. Mark your calendars!

Garments on display include the infamous Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra/corset from the Blonde Ambition Tour, her “Like A Virgin” wedding dress, and other instantly-recognizable pieces from designers like Christian Lacroix. For one day, these fashion artifacts will be showcased to the public so fans to get up close and personal (well, as personal as one can get with a cone bra behind glass) with the Queen of Reinvention's stylish wardrobe. Madonna has personally handpicked eight of her favorite ensembles from an archive of tour costumes and her personal collection for the event with the help of Arianne Phillips--the singer's longtime collaborator who also styled and helped to curate the exhibit. Phillips is especially emphatic about Madonna's groundbreaking costume from her 1984 MTV Video Music Awards performance of "Like A Virgin," calling the outfit “one of the most shocking, liberating and influential moments in pop culture/fashion history.” We completely agree. "Fashion has never been the same," said Phillips. "Bold and unforgiving, humorous and shocking, we can depend on Madonna to challenge us to rethink fashion. Madonna has taken sacred garments like the wedding dress and religious embellishments, and re-contextualized them,” she added. Ditto what she said!

The exhibition marks the first time many of these items have been in the same place at the same time--the cone bustier, for example was flown in from a Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit in Amsterdam while her “Like A Virgin” wedding dress is on loan from the legendary Hard Rock Cafe. The remaining items come to fans straight from Madonna’s personal archives. Because of course Madonna has personal archives. Wouldn't you if you were Madonna?

The singer is excited about the event, saying “The pop-up exhibit at Macy’s perfectly exemplifies the inspiration and spirit of the Material Girl line and will give my fans a great opportunity to see the evolution of my style over the years." We think it's sweet that not only is this an opportunity for Madonna to give back to her fans, but that she gets to share the moment with her daughter, Lourdes (aka Lola). Together, the mother-daughter team brought Material Girl to life in 2010. The line is a fast-fashion junior collection exclusive to Macy's and is inspired and designed by the two.
