What's the right red lipstick for you?

Red lips are the perfect complement to this season’s ladylike fashions-- or any fashion if you ask us. But the key is finding that particular red--a blue-red, say, as opposed to an orange- or pink-red-- that best suits your hair, skin, eyes, and personality. In this episode, celebrity makeup artist Robin Watson-Hamilton helps three Thread viewers select the red that works for them, and then we supply a sexy, on-trend look to show it off.

When wearing red lipstick the universal rule is to keep the rest of your makeup clean and neutral, says celebrity makeup artist Robin Watson-Hamilton. That doesn’t mean boring, however. Big lashes and liquid-liner cat-eyes are great options, but you don’t want to detract from the high-impact statement of your lips with much more than that. Here’s what Watson-Hamilton suggests for our three Thread viewers:

Pink-red like Ashley Greene

Watson-Hamilton thought Elise, a brunette with blue eyes and fair skin, could work a pinkish-red shade a la "Twilight" star Ashley Greene— and she was 100% right. The pink pigment made Elise’s eyes appear even bluer, and a thin line of black liquid eyeliner added the perfect amount of drama.

Brown-red like Whitney Port

To go with Gina’s blonde hair and brown eyes, Watson-Hamilton took a page from Whitney Port’s style book and chose a red shade with a brown undertone to warm up Gina’s skin. She kept the rest of Gina's complexion even and added neutral shadow to her lids for a subtle glow.

Blue-red like Jessica Alba

Watson-Hamilton took one look at Nicole's coloring and brown eyes and selected the classic Old Hollywood red—a bright, blue-red that Jessica Alba, for one, loves. It’s the shade that looks best on most skin tones and goes so well with a set of thick, heavy lashes. The bigger the better.
