How to pick the perfect hair color

Trying out a new hair color is a quick way to make a high-impact change. What's always freaked me out about it, though, is picking the right shade. Here's a helpful solution: Clairol Perfect 10's web app lets you upload a photo of yourself and virtually test out colors before you break out the dye. We asked viewers to give it a try and then email us their before and after images. In this episode, celebrity colorist Sharon Dorram weighs in on the after shots- including one of me as a fiery redhead!

Celebrity colorist Sharon Dorram is known for creating natural-looking shades that are easy to maintain. She's worked with gorgeous blondes like Kate Winslet, Meg Ryan and Renee Zellweger and can be found working her magic at her New York salon Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger.

Picking the optimal new shade is a tricky calculus that involves taking skin color, eye color, hair texture, and one's personality into consideration. Someone may love the idea of lightening up into a butterscotch blonde or deepening their locks to a jet black. But will the result wash them out or entirely overpower their features? Dorram recommends staying 2 to 3 shades lighter or darker than your natural color. Another one of Dorram's DIY color commandments is to try on a wig in the desired shade to preview the overall effect. The Perfect 10 web app is a faster and easier way of getting the same visual information.
