How to pull off the season's hottest hair trend: sideswept hair

The season’s hottest hair trend can be worn many different ways. Sideswept hair can cascade over your shoulders or be pulled back in a tight, low ponytail. The vibe can be sweet and innocent or sexy and fierce. In this episode, celebrity hair and makeup artist extraordinaire Michiko Boorberg shows us how to create four different sideswept styles for four Thread viewers and we give each of them new looks to match.

When you see a trendy hairstyle, sometimes it seem like you’d need the assistance of a professional (or three) to re-create it. What I love about the sideswept look, in all its permutations, is that it’s shockingly easy to do on your own head! Here are the steps to help you try out four sideswept styles.

Roughed-up and sexy

To get the right perfectly imperfect texture for this look, prep your hair with spray gel and scrunch it with your hand while blow-drying. Part your hair to the side and use a medium-barrel curling iron to add random waves. When finished, comb through the curls with your fingers to achieve a relaxed bedhead vibe. Tease hair at the roots to add volume, and use hairspray to keep everything in place.

Super-sleek and polished

Start by giving yourself an extreme side-part-- more extreme than you’d think to add drama. Use a flat iron to tame any frizzy pieces or flyaways. Smooth the hair across your forehead and set in place with spray gel (and bobby pins if necessary.) Pull the hair back into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure with an elastic.

Flirty and romantic

This is a great look for girls with long locks. Again, your first step is to create texture. Apply spray gel from the roots to the ends. Part your hair on the side and add some height by teasing a bit at the crown. Pull your hair to one side and twist it into a fishtail side braid. Sweep the front pieces across your forehead and lock in place with hairspray.

Glam with a touch of grunge

You want the end result to have height and volume, so begin by working mousse through your hair staring at the roots and scrunch the strands as you blow-dry. Create a deep side part and sweep hair across your forehead. Tease a bit at the crown and pull the hair into a low ponytail while leaving the volume at the crown. Pull a few pieces out around the face. Cover the elastic by wrapping it with a small section of hair from the ponytail and securing it with a bobby pin.
