Food: Unique Food Markets Across the UK

Written by Kelly Herdrich

Food markets across the United Kingdom are a popular choice for tourists and locals alike. Whether you're shopping to stock the fridge, looking for something unique, or simply hoping to get a feel for the local flavor (literally), farmer's and food markets are where it's at. Where should you head on Market Day? The options are endless.

Otley Farmers' Market

The Otley Farmers' Market actually operates three markets in Yorkshire, one in Harrogate, one in Otley, and one in Knaresborough. Each is held once a month on either a Sunday or a Thursday. What makes the Otley Farmers' Market unique? Most of the items are sourced locally, all are fresh, and many (if not all) are organic, which isn't the case at many larger markets. If nothing else, be sure to grab a slice of Wensleydale while you're there. In addition to delicious cheeses, fresh eggs, well-stocked butcher shops, fresh jam and honey, and fruit and vegetables, Otley, Harrogate, and Knaresborough are all delightful, smaller city centres with much to see and do.

Perth Farmers' Market

If you're traveling through Scotland while touring the UK, consider making time to visit the Perth Farmers' Market. It's one of the first markets in Scotland, there are 30-40 stalls, and it takes place just once a month on the first Saturday (except for January). There's a large list of stallholders every month, and you never know who'll be there from one month to the next. One of the highlights of the market is a cooking demonstration. You can also find a variety of recipes on the well-maintained website.

Taunton Farmers' Market

Touted as one of the 10 best farmers' markets in the UK, the Taunton Farmers' Market is a relative newcomer to the market day arena. However, it boasts some of the best fresh, regional, organic, and hand-made food in the area. Taunton is located in Somerset in southern England, and this market day occurs every Thursday from 9 AM until 3 PM.

Hampshire Farmers' Market

There are over a dozen farmers' markets run in the Hampshire region by Hampshire Farmers' Markets. Unlike some of the other markets in the region, Hampshire Farmers' Market guarantees that all items sold are sourced within ten miles of the counties border. It's the quality of a small-town market with the organization and the backing of a larger market. The extensive market day schedule that Hampshire Farmers' Market offers mean that you can find a market almost any day you want to shop.

Make time to visit at least one market while you're on holiday in the UK. Your taste buds will thank you.
