3 Must-Live-By Style Tips for Your 40s

Your 40s are the perfect time to redefine and perfect the look that you've cultivated over the last two decades. Here are three essential tips from makeup artists and stylists from the renowned Marie Robinson Salon and the trend-setting clothing store Intermix in New York City on how to look your best in your 40s. For hair color: "Don't let you hair color age you," says colorist Eric Muroski. "The blonde, brunette, and auburn hues that you wore in your 20s and 30s aren't necessarily the same shades that will work best for you in your 40s. Talk to your stylist and colorist and find a shade that works for your skin tone and your lifestyle. If you have less time to dedicate to - or interest in maintaining - your color, then that's something to consider." Related: Check out the 50 Best Hairstyle Secrets

For your wardrobe: "I maintain that you can wear almost any style, regardless of age, just as long as you find the right cut and the right detailing," said stylist Patrick Fields. For example, you can absolutely still wear skinny jeans and leggings in your 40s and 50s. The key is to choose something with more structure and flattering lines - it's all about fit and fabric. The right cut and tailoring will look great and make you look longer and leaner, which will give you the confidence to pull anything off!"

For makeup: "This is no longer an age when bright blue eye shadow works for most people," says makeup artist Landy Dean. "Keep your makeup natural-looking, but break up neutral tones with cooler ones to bring dimension and definition to your face. A soft smoky eye is completely appropriate for all age groups and looks great when paired with long, full lashes."
