3 Ways to Save Money with Foursquare3 Ways to Save Money with Foursquare

When Foursquare first came out, I was hesitant. Do I really want people to know where I am all the time? When I finally joined in, it was only because one of my favorite restaurants offered a discount for a Foursquare check-in!

Eventually, I was checking in on Foursquare almost everywhere I went, and I quickly learned there was more than one way to save money with Foursquare.

HOW IT WORKS

Download the app to your smartphone, and register with Foursquare. As you go about your daily life, you can click Check-In, select your location, and check in to a business. You'll earn badges for visiting different types of places and unlock specials to save money.

If you're hesitant about letting everyone know where you are, use the privacy controls to keep your information private. Do not accept friend requests from people you don't trust. And, refrain from checking it at certain locations. I never check in at my bank, for example.

You can also hold off on checking in until you're ready to leave. You'll need to have your check-in screen handy when you pay, if you've unlocked a special, anyway.

HOW IT SAVES MONEY

  • Foursquare Specials: The most obvious way to save with Foursquare is by participating in specials offered by local businesses. When you check in to participating location, you will unlock the special. This can range from free samples to discounts to gift cards. I once got a $10 gift card just for checking in to Del Sol on vacation - hooray for free souvenirs!
  • User Tips: Foursquare users have the ability to leave tips for the businesses they visit. Read these! People will share drink specials, tell you where to find coupons or let you know you'll be wasting your money on a non-recommended business. I've personally left tips on bad customer service at a local attraction, Margarita Monday at my favorite Mexican restaurant, and the top secret location for clearance at my grocery store.
  • Number of Check-Ins: Paying attention to how many times you check in at your most frequented spots is another great way to save money. You'll be able to see if you're spending too much time at restaurants, malls or other places you could cut out of your budget. When Foursquare says, "You've been here 3 times this week." I know it's time to reevaluate my grocery shopping habits.
