Do You Embrace Your Natural Skin Tone?

By Amy Keller Laird,Allure magazine

Earlier this week, beauty news editor Heather Muir wrote about the spike in self-tanner sales that occurred after Pippa Middleton appeared all bronzed and radiant at the royal wedding. But all of Pippa's glowiness didn't sway me to slather on the self-tanner. I'm pale year-round…and that's how I like it. Partly it's because I'm too busy with highlights upkeep and bang trims to get regular spray tans. But part of me just prefers to live in my natural skin tone.

Apparently, I'm not the only one. The other day, I posted this question on Twitter (follow me! @amykellerlaird): "Am I the only person who just embraces the pale and doesn't spray tan?" The outpouring of responses echoing my sentiment was overwhelming. Besides tons of retweets, I heard a few "pale and proud"s, one beauty editor referenced alabaster beauties Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman-and one PR person who clearly didn't get my point said she'd be happy to send me a gradual self-tanning lotion. Now, whether your skin is pasty like mine or naturally darker, maybe this is the beginning of something. Maybe, just maybe, it means we're all growing more comfortable with the skin we're in.

Check out a few of the responses I received, and let me know what you think, too!

@LookGreatBlog: Nope, I am the same way. Would much rather be pale than streaky/orange.

@odeliza: i prefer one's natural skin tone instead of the spray ;)

@TheBeautyFile: for the record, I've never spray tanned + never will! Pale is better than orange in my book.

@Jason__Ramsey: Nope, & pale is beautiful.

@RachKel13: Emphatically NOT! Call me Casper.

@oldergirlbeauty: I don't either!! looks really fake on me. I'll just show off my freckles and dimples and be happy! :)

@Kelsohlala: no way pale is the new tan!

@hannahejo: Was called "Casper" as a kid but I still wear SPF, even in Winter. Ah well!
